The mercury goes more than 40-degree Celcius in some of the major cities in India. With the soaring temperature, unscheduled power cut has become a normal thing. While you may wade through the day, it gets almost impossible to sleep at night in this hot weather, especially if you do not have an air conditioner at your place.

How to cool down a room without AC?

A few quick tips and trips, a bunch of which you’ve probably never heard, can mean the difference between a sleepless night in a borderline sauna and some blissful zzzs. Living through a hot summer without AC seems impossible but, hey, our grandparents did it all the time! Turns out, they learned a few things in the process.


Here are the basic things need to follow before going on the bed in summer (Without AC)?

1. Be A Self-lover

Sorry lovebugs, but sleeping alone is way better than spooning for staying cool. Cuddling with a partner increases body heat, making the bed a sticky, sweaty pit of despair instead of a cool, calm oasis.


2. Careful Of What You Eat & Drink

Try to stay away from greasy and heavy meals before going to bed during summers. Your digestive system will have to work harder in order to burn the calories, which will produce more heat and will make you feel hotter. Also, control your alcohol intake as it can disturb your sweet sleep.


3. Fill Up The Tank

Get a leg up on hydration by drinking a glass of water before bed. Tossing and turning and sweating at night can result in dehydration, so get some H20 in the tank beforehand. (Pro tip: Just eight ounces will do the trick unless you’re really into that 3 a.m. bathroom runs.)


4. Unplug Appliances

The appliances present in your home also generate heat and make the surroundings hotter. If not in use, take off the plugs of your appliances at night. This way you will not only save energy but your room will stay cool.


5. Camp At Home

Got access to a safe outdoor space like a roof, courtyard, or backyard? Practice those camping skills (and stay cooler) by pitching a tent and sleeping al fresco.


6. Sleep Downstairs

If you live in an independent house, it is advisable to shift downstairs during the summer season. The lower floors are cooler as compared to the upper floors.


7. Turn Off The Lights

This tip is pretty self-explanatory. Light bulbs (even environmentally-friendly CFLs) give off heat. Fortunately, summer means it stays light until eight or nine at night. Take advantage of natural light as much as possible, and keep rooms cool after dark by using lights minimally or not at all (romantic candle-lit dinner, anyone?).


8. Cool Your Pulse Point

Cooling down your pulse points like wrist and neck can help you lower your body temperature. Place a wet cloth on your neck and wrist for some cooling effect. Our blood vessels are closer to our skin surface and cooling your wrists and neck helps to manage your body temperature. You can also soak your feet in a bucket of cool water.


9. Take A Warm Shower

This may sound weird but taking a warm shower is good for your bedtime. By having a warm water bath, your body becomes more adept to bear the hot weather. As per a study published in 2018 Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, runners who took hot bath were able to adjust to the heat and performed better on the field.


10. Choose Cotton.

The last but the major thing that needs to be concerned, wear light and loose clothing at night for better and sound sleep. Choose natural fiber like cotton as it can absorb sweat easily. Save the ooh-la-la satin, silk, or polyester sheets for cooler nights. Light-colored bed linens made of lightweight cotton (Egyptian or otherwise) are breathable and excellent for promoting ventilation and airflow in the bedroom.
